A Minimalist's View
by Frederic Kielemoes
For the 2018 edition of Biënnale Interieur in Kortrijk, Frederic Kielemoes designed a mesmerizing Odilon Creations booth. He built it around one clear idea: to give our natural mineral finishes a calm, minimalist space in which they can speak at their best.
It Started with a Grid
The design began with a grid. Onto that grid, vertical surfaces were added in different heights, some rising to 4.8 metres. The result is a composition of tall and lower planes, where the height changes from one wall to the next and the rhythm of the whole booth comes from that variation.
Finishes for Every Wall
Each of these walls was finished with natural mineral products for interior design, developed by Odilon Creations. They reflect what we believe in: the beauty and power of pure, honest and authentic materials, made to measure and applied with true craftsmanship. On large, quiet planes, colour, depth and the hand of the craftsperson become the main subject.
Frames That Carry the Design
Horizontal and vertical metal frames, combined with transparent mesh surfaces, gave the concept an extra dimension and tied the separate walls into one entity. All of the metal structures are load-bearing, so they keep every vertical surface stable. The frame is therefore part of the design and part of the engineering at once. The transparent mesh lets the eye travel through to the next plane, which keeps the layers of the stand in conversation with each other.
